Matthew 5:17 What does it mean?

In the New Testament, Matthew 5:17, Jesus states: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Another translation says the laws of Moses and the prophets.

Jesus fulfilled the law and created a new way of following him, one in which our hearts are called to live in obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus and the Holy Spirit give to you
the desire,
the need,
the willingness,
to change how you see things in your life.

My most difficult sin was lying. Sometimes I said,”it is just a little lie.” Other times I convinced myself that it was for your own good. Or—-for my own good. It did not matter my reasoning.

IT IS A LIE!
IT IS NOT HONEST!

IT WAS A LIE!
IT WAS NOT HONEST!

Through prayer, God and His Holy Spirit first made me aware of my lying. They also asked me why I lied and I gave them my reasons. Then I noticed the desire not to lie. That was when lying became difficult for me. I felt discomfort. Then I had the willingness to surrender my lying. I wanted to CHANGE my behavior.

If the Holy Spirit guided me, I could be silent, choose to tell the truth, or set a time in the near future to tell the truth. My silence and delay in telling the truth were not the best choice. When I became aware of a lie I was about to tell, I learned to say nothing. I learned:

Honesty

Respect

People don’t need your lies but instead need respect for them and honesty.

That is when I learned to be honest. That was and is my journey. It didn’t happen overnight.

Jesus wants and desires that we choose a sin as we become aware. Next to receive guidance by the Holy Spirit and prayer, and finally, choose to let go of the sin.

An interesting fact that I found was sometimes you choose one sin and several other sins leave too. Ones that supported the sin that you chose.

Understand the God wants you to do better and make better choices in your life. Sometimes those choices or the sins, themselves are hard and other times they are easy and a gift from God.
