Question…What’s a chapter of your life you’d title “The Hard Years” — and what got you through it?
The chapter of my life that was the hardest for me was the year 1987 when began having memories and flashbacks about sexual abuse in my home that occurred at about age four or five.
I was in my thirties and was starting counselling from Jane, a psychologist. The purpose for counselling was about coping with my troublesome relationship with my husband who was an alcoholic. I talked about the verbal abuse of me and the kids as well as physical abuse of just the children. I remember asking,
“How do I get strong enough to leave the b****d?”
She listened for awhile very quietly and as she gently gave some support, she suggested weekly visits to her for counselling and that I should try Alan-on, a group for help dealing with my husband’s alcoholism. She gave me an Alan-on pamphlet and a phone number to call about meetings near my home. At the end of our visit, I made another appointment for one week. I finally felt I had a plan for help.
Over the next few days things were their usual chaos and arguments with the children crying or playing depending on the temperature of the house. At night, I began having nightmares, in bits and pieces, later identified as memories of a little blond girl (me) whom later I named Susie.
